US Highway 1 in Virginia, Virginia, Postcard History Series, Paperback

US Highway 1 in Virginia, Virginia, Postcard History Series, Paperback The images in Postcard History Series: US Highway 1 in Virginia are representative of the nearly 200 miles of this historic highway and the communities along and near its path. Most of these pictorial memories are at least 50 years old, back when motorists were well acquainted with hand-pumping filling stations, mom-and-pop diners, and numerous tourist homes and cabins. In 1927, Route 1 became all concrete between Washington, DC, and Richmond. Business flourished until the interstate highway system came into being in the 1950s. There is much history surrounding US 1, often called America’s Main Street.

Detroit’s Lost Poletown

Detroit’s Lost Poletown Poletown was a once vibrant, ethnically diverse neighborhood in Detroit. In its prime, it had a store on every corner. Its theaters, restaurants and schools thrived, and its churches catered to a multiplicity of denominations. In 1981, General Motors announced plans for a new plant in Detroit and pointed to the 465 acres of Poletown. Using the law of eminent domain with a quick-take clause, the city planned to relocate 4,200 residents within ten months and raze the neighborhood. With unprecedented defiance, the residents fought back in vain. In 2004, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the eminent domain law applied to Poletown was unconstitutional–a ruling that came two decades too late.

Remembering Mississippi’s Confederates, Mississippi, Images of America, Paperbac

Remembering Mississippi’s Confederates, Mississippi, Images of America, Paperbac Remembering Mississippi’s Confederates is a collection of never-before-seen images which document the history of these soldiers. The Confederate States of America engaged in a battle for national survival that lasted four long and incredibly bloody years. The conflict went on for so long because thousands of rebels were willing to lay down their lives and defend their homes to the last man and last cartridge. Many of these soldiers were Mississippians–approximately 78,000 citizens of the Magnolia State can be documented as having served in the Civil War. Of this number, over 27,500 died either of disease or in combat. Remembering Mississippi’s Confederates is a photographic tribute to the men who fought so gallantly for their state. Many of the images in this volume have never been published and come from the proud descendants of the soldiers themselves; others were acquired from collections spread across the United States.

Guerrilla Hunters in Civil War Missouri, Missouri, Civil War Series, Paperback

Guerrilla Hunters in Civil War Missouri, Missouri, Civil War Series, Paperback The guerrillas who terrorized Missouri during the Civil War were colorful men whose daring and vicious deeds brought them a celebrity never enjoyed by the Federal soldiers who hunted them. Many books have been written about William Quantrill, Bloody Bill“ Anderson, George Todd, Tom Livingston and other noted guerrillas. You have probably not heard of George Wolz, Aaron Caton, John Durnell, Thomas Holston or Ludwick St. John. They served in Union cavalry regiments in Missouri, where neither side showed mercy to defeated foes. They are just five of the anonymous thousands who, in the end, defeated the guerrillas and have been forgotten with the passage of time. This is their story.“
